Southeast Republicans’ Annual Lincoln Day Dinner

Missouri House of Representatives

The annual Lincoln Day Dinner was held this weekend, and Southeast Republicans came in droves to show their support.

The main idea was to support Jason Smith, the the state representative who has been thrust into the spotlight for Congress. And there was plenty of talk about opposition to President Obama’s plans.

Among items discussed were the Sequestration, taxes, cuts, and of course, the national deficit. The speakers were vociferous on their plans to oppose any form of spending increase, and electing Jason Smith to Congress, they agreed, was key to doing just that.

Senator Wayne Wallingford says a big part of the problem is government not balancing the budget, and plans such as Medicaid cannot be counted on.

“For a country like ours that’s nearly bankrupt, in Washington, D.C. I can’t even count on what they say they’re gonna give us, let alone knowing what will happen in the future when costs escalate,” Wallingford said.

Representative Kathy Swan also disagrees with the Medicaid Expansion. She says the proposed Medicaid expansion looks at the short term, and that’s not acceptable.

“We do not want to accept that money without a long-term vision,” Swan said. “And the long-term vision is uncertain right now, because how can we afford to continue to insure those added to the plan without the federal reimbursement.”

She continued by saying this is important, but there are better ways to support people than by adding to federal debt troubles. This is a consensus among the Republican party, who are opposed to any plans to increase spending.
