Downtown Cape Girardeau In Running For Fresh Coat Of Paint

United States Marine Corps

Downtown Cape Girardeau may get a fresh coat of paint- if it gets enough votes. The Benjamin Moore paint company selected Cape Girardeau as a candidate for getting three downtown blocks painted through its “Main Street Matters” program. The top twenty cities in an online poll will win.

Old Town Cape project manager NicholleHinkle says this is the first time Benjamin Moore has sponsored this type of contest.

“They’re partnering with the local stores that carry Benjamin Moore Paints and then also local paint contractors,” Hinkle said. “They hope to complete the project within a year of the launch date, which was last Thursday.”

Old Town Cape executive director Marla Mills says this is a great chance to spruce up a big area of downtown all at once.

“We have a lot going on downtown already. We have a lot of improvements,” Mills said. “But sometimes when it’s a house here or a building there and combined it’s a lot, but if you don’t see that big of an impact all at once, you don’t notice it as much.”

Voting is at www.paintwhatmatters.com. One vote per IP address can be submitted each day through June 30. Once the 20 main streets are selected, the public will be able to follow the progress of the painting.
