A bill given initial approval by the Senate on Thursday would create new protections for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence when it comes to their housing.

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Lauren Arthur, said she was contacted by a constituent who ended up with an eviction on her record after leaving an abusive relationship because her name was still on the lease.

“Without this legislation, victims may be reluctant to leave a dangerous situation or if they find the courage to do so, they’ll face legal and financial problems,” said Arthur.

The bill specifies that no tenant can be denied tenancy, evicted from their property or be found in violation of their lease agreement on the basis of being a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault.
