For the second time in less than a week, a major Cape Girardeau employer says it is shutting its doors.
PolyOne will shut down its facility on Nash Road in Cape Girardeau. The move is expected to affect approximately 90 workers at the site.
The Nash Road facility used to be owned by Spartech. PolyOne completed its purchase of Spartech in March. Mayor Harry Rediger said the move caught him off guard, especially after Spartech expanded on Nash Road.
“Frankly, we were looking for them in the future to expand some more and felt fairly confident that that was going to happen,” Rediger said. “But the company went in a different direction.”
Last week, Integrity Solutions Services announced they will close their doors and lay off 420 workers. Rediger said there is no relationship between the two closings.
“The only connection is they happened within a week of each other, and that is a blow to a community,” Rediger said. “But we have a very vibrant and growing community that has great work ethic. We’ve got other businesses that are expanding. We’ve got some new businesses that are looking at our city.”
In a press release, PolyOne said they are shutting down six sites to reduce redundancy. The other Cape GirardeauPolyOne site will not be affected.
