Cape Girardeau city officials are gearing up for the opening of the city’s new business park.
The Missouri Department of Transportation completed an extension of Veterans Memorial drive to the 247 acre park that sits at the intersection of Interstate 55 and La Salle Avenue.
Cape Girardeaumayor Harry Rediger says the city is in the process of signing its first client and finding ways to fund infrastructure. The city is working on a sewer extension while Ameren is working towards bringing power to the site.
“We have out-for-bid some water extension that will be needed for that,” Mayor Rediger said. “We have a grant application in that is being reviewed by the state now that would give us some $700,000 plus for this first client that will help with the street and road inside.”
Rediger hopes to have an announcement on the first client within the next couple of months.
Rediger said this is not a “smokestack type” industrial park. He hopes to attract very light manufacturing, distribution centers, and high tech projects. He sid there is room for some commercial development along La Salle Avenue.
The city purchased the land from the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation last December for $6 million.
