As part of the Missouri State Highway Patrol campaign, “Move Over or Get Pulled Over,” the Cape Girardeau Police Department will be enforcing traffic violations along Interstate 55 on Tuesday, July 9.

The campaign is aimed at keeping motorists and emergency workers safe.

Per the "traffic regulations" section of Missouri Law, drivers who encounter a stopped emergency vehicle are required to move over and proceed with caution. They should yield the right-of-way, if possible, with due regard to safety and traffic conditions by moving into a lane that is not adjacent to the stopped emergency vehicle while on a roadway with at least four lanes, at least two of which are in the motorist’s direction of travel. And, if a lane change is not possible, motorists must proceed with caution, slow down, and maintain a safe speed for traffic conditions.

For more information on keeping emergency service workers safe, visit the patrol’s website here.
