Sand Volleyball Courts Reopen After Week-Long Closure Following Hidden Knife Incident

Lindsey Grojean/KRCU

The sand volleyball courts near Arena Park in Cape Girardeau have been reopened after being shut down for the majority of last week. Two teenage girls had discovered paring knives hidden in the sand on May 20, causing the parks and recreation department to close the facility that evening.

Staff combed through the sand the following morning with rakes and metal detectors to check for any other hidden items.

Sergeant Joey Hahn with the Cape Girardeau Police Department says there have been no new developments on leads or evidence, but no further instances either.

The courts reopened on Wednesday just in time for the sand volleyball league.

Parks and Recreation Department director Julia Jones says they are currently researching security camera installations for various play areas, but no final decisions have been made.
