Cape Girardeau Wins Grant Money To Revitalize Ivers Square

Lindsey Grojean/KRCU

Cape Girardeau has been declared a winning location of a grant through an American Express campaign called “Partners in Preservation: Main Streets”.

Old Town Cape will receive $127,000 to fully fund a revitalization project aimed at restoring the newly renamed Ivers Square, located on the grounds of the Common Pleas Courthouse.

Parker Butler, project manager at Old Town Cape, says though they were competing with 25 other communities across the country, they knew they could engage the local audience enough to make it into the top ten to receive funding.

“To even be nominated into the same category as those communities was absolutely incredible, says Butler. “And to come out and beat a lot of them I think really showed what Cape Girardeau is made of.”

Butler says they were up against several large communities including New Orleans, Hollywood, and Washington D.C., and the public had the chance to vote for a list of these projects last month.

With the money, Old Town Cape plans to make improvements to the gazebo at Ivers Square, and restore it to resemble the bandstand it was originally built for in 1931.
