Annual Downtown Christmas Open House Has More Attractions And Events Than Previous Years

Old Town Cape
Cape Girardeau's Main Street during the holiday season

Old Town Cape’s annual Downtown Christmas Open House is set for Friday, Dec. 5 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The event will include all the attractions from previous years, including the opportunity to win a $1,500 downtown shopping spree, carriage rides, pictures with Santa, caroling by local church choirs and much more.

For the first time, the event will be traveling up Broadway Street with seven businesses participating in the giveaway promotion and several other businesses staying open late that evening.

A live nativity scene will be set up in the lawn of First Presbyterian Church, and Discovery Playhouse will host a free kids activity.

“It’s so festive,” project manager Christa Zickfield said. “Downtown is decorated, stores are open late, there’s carriage rides, there’s carolers. It’s kind of something out of a movie that you would see where the entire downtown comes alive. It’s promoting a festive Christmas atmosphere and, it’s so special and charming.”

Weather permitting, anywhere from 750 to 2,000 guests are expected to participate in the event.

Zickfield said the Open House is a fun experience for the whole family to enjoy.

“That sense of community, everyone coming together with all the festiveness, it’s just kind of a unique opportunity that we don’t get frequently in our area, and it’s fun to experience that with my friends and family,” Zickfield said.
