On this episode of KRCU’s 'Going Public', we speak with Susie Johnson, President of the Ste. Genevieve Chapter of 'Abide in Love', a group that supports those who are detained and their families, about the work their group does and how ICE's presence in the region might be perceived after the detentions at the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo.
During the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo two weeks ago, three men were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a news release from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety about ICE's actions in the area. One of the men, Ricardo Gonzalez Montez, has a hearing scheduled for August 24, 2026.
Johnson talks about how this incident reflects ICE's presence and actions in the region and how the chapter's work has evolved over the past year.
