Two-Minute Drill: SEMO Track & Field Student-Athletes Earn OVC Honors

Southeast Athletics

Three Redhawk student-athletes earned Ohio Valley Conference Athlete of the Year awards last week at the OVC Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Nick Bryant was named the OVC Male Freshman of the Year while Kaitlyn Shea was awarded OVC Female Track Athlete of the Year. Anya Tonga was tabbed the OVC Female Field Athlete of the Year for the second-straight season at the conclusion of the meet.

Bryant is the first Redhawk to earn the award since Chris Martin in 2014. Southeast last swept the OVC Female Athlete of the Year laurels in 2005 when Brooke Woodruff (Track) and Kathy Coleman (Field) captured the distinction.

Bryant won Gold at the Indoor Championship in the 400 meters after he was clocked at a personal-best 47.89 in the second and final heat. He was also part of the 4x400 relay team that took home bronze.

Shea took silver in the 5,000 meter race, as well as fourth in the 3,000 meters and sixth in the mile.

Tonga took the top spot on the podium in the weight throw with a personal best, and also scored sixth place in the shot put.

Overall, the Redhawks women took third place in the team competition, while the men placed second – only three and a half points behind champion EIU.

The Redhawks will commence the outdoor season in two weeks, and will host the Joey Haines Invitational on April 3-4.
