Two Minute Drill: Saine and Thompson Awarded All-OVC Honors

LaTrese Saine and Tesia Thompson were each named to the 2020-21 All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team. Saine was also awarded OVC Defensive Player of the Year.

Saine is the second Redhawk in school history to earn OVC Defensive Player of the Year after Adrianna Murphy nabbed the laurel in 2017-18. 

The redshirt senior from West Memphis, Arkansas, ranks second in the entire country and first in the conference with 94 total blocked shots (3.76 blocks/game) this season. Saine has also pulled down 216 total boards (8.6 rebounds/game), good for second in the league. She ranks second in the OVC with eight double-doubles, averaging 10.4 points per game. 

Saine is the all-time blocks leader at SEMO, breaking the single-season, single-game (10) and career records (203) this season.

Thompson was selected to her was picked to her third-straight All-OVC First Team, and she has been named to at least one team each of her four seasons as a Redhawk. 

Thompson, who was last year’s OVC Tournament MVP, leads the league this season with 18.7 points per game, and she ranks fourth with 8.5 rebounds per game. The Memphis, Tennessee native will finish her career as one of the all-time greats in SEMO Women’s Basketball history, as she ranks third all-time with 1,927 points in 112 career games. Thompson is also fourth in the record books for rebounds (801) and fifth for steals (192). 

The No. 3-seeded Redhawks made their will sixth-straight tournament appearance yesterday at the 2020-21 OVC Basketball Championship in Evansville. Follow the team’s tournament progress online at GoSoutheast.com.
