Governor Parson is urging the cancellation or postponement of public gatherings of 50 people or more in Missouri, according to a press release issued late Sunday night.

This announcement follows new recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding growing concerns over the novel coronavirus outbreak. They report that mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 via travelers who attend large events and introduce the virus to new communities.

With the exception of educational institutions, daycare facilities, and business operations, these new recommendations from the CDC will remain effective for 8 weeks.

Parson also encouraged local governments and health agencies to provide the same guidance, and asked elderly citizens and those with underlying medical conditions to avoid public gatherings altogether.

“We ask that facilities that attract large concentrations of senior citizens to strongly consider restrictions and closures, in consultation with health authorities, to protect those most vulnerable to this virus,” said Parson, adding that schools should also follow CDC guidelines and consult with public health authorities as decisions are made on whether to keep school in session.

He said his administration is working closely with both federal and local officials in order to “maximize coordination” and tailor their response appropriately.

“It takes all of us at the local, state, and federal level along with neighbors, families, and fellow citizens to use common sense and personal responsibility to work through these tough times and protect the health and safety of all Missourians,” said Parson.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, out of 170 patients tested so far, 6 people have tested positive and 164 have tested negative. Positive cases are residents of St. Louis County (2), Greene County (2) and Henry County (1). No deaths have been reported. The location of the newest case will be announced soon as public health professionals make notifications.
