UPDATE 5/05 3:07 p.m.: This story has been updated with the latest road closures.
Rising flood waters from the Mississippi River have lead to more road closures and service delays in the Cape Girardeau area. KRCU previously reported both the railroad and pedestrian gates on the river wall have been closed off. With more rain forecasted this week, city officials say the Red Star neighborhood will be affected by the flood water. The City of Cape Girardeau’s Public Works Department have made sandbags available to those in that neighborhood.
As the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau nears major flood stage this week, the National Weather Service is predicting the river to crest at 48.5 feet. That’s inches shy of last January’s high water record of 48.86 feet.
