State and Local Safety Personnel To Practice Earthquake Response Training With FEMA’s “Shaken Fury”

The City Of Cape Girardeau

If you’re planning on being in the Cape Girardeau area over the next few days, you may see a large number of emergency personnel in action. Don’t panic - it’s part of an earthquake response training by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Thetwo-day event, nicknamed “Shaken Fury,” will involve the Missouri National Guard, Missouri Task Force 1, Southeast Missouri’s Region E Homeland Security Response Team (HSRT), emergency medical personnel from SoutheastHEALTH, and Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Public Safety.

They will run through a series of exercises - including a triage response simulation and a building collapse - which utilize a 7.7 magnitude earthquake scenario along the southwest segment of the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The public is being asked to keep their distance on June 4 and 5, and to give personnel comfortable space to perform field exercises. Those curious about “Shaken Fury” can still use local and social media to watch the event, or to stay up-to-date.

The city says while officials are training for their responsibilities, it’s a good time for everyone to practice personal preparedness plans for any hazard that could impact their life or property.
