This community loves red, white and blue – whether it’s flying in the breeze or bursting over Arena Park.
In honor of Independence Day, I invite you to walk or drive between hundreds of waving American flags on Cape County Park North’s Avenue of Flags. Then stop at the military memorial to reflect. Each branch is represented on a large monument, with a smaller memorial paying tribute to local law enforcement. It’s a breathtaking sight.
Fort D will also be buzzing with patriotic activity from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 4th. The only surviving Civil War fort in Cape Girardeau comes alive with cannon and rifle demonstrations. Meet the descendants of soldiers in Powell’s Battery F, Second Illinois Light Artillery, and explore the interpretive signs to learn more about Fort D’s role in the Civil War.
The evening brings everyone’s favorite: fireworks! There are thousands of fireworks displays across the United States on the Fourth of July, and it’s a tradition Cape loves being part of. The grandstands in Arena Park open at 6 p.m., and the Municipal Band will begin playing patriotic music at 8. Then fireworks burst overhead at 9:15. Expect to be amazed; everyone becomes a kid again during the fireworks display.
Continue family-friendly fun on Friday, July 5th with an outdoor movie in Capaha Park. This week, it’s beloved football classic “The Blind Side.” Bring a lawn chair or blanket and get comfortable. Food trucks begin serving at 8 p.m., and the movie starts at 9.
