Big white tents are popping up all over business parking lots, which can only mean one thing: firework season. The Cape Girardeau Fire Department has a few reminders and general safety tips on firework celebrations.
Fire Marshall Brian Shaffer says firework use should come with adult supervision, sparklers are not meant to be used by younger children, and if you come across a dud firework, let it cool off before handling it.
“Always have a bucket of water ready so that you can go up and pour the water on the dud, or the fireworks that you’ve also used, just to make sure there’s no fire hazard,” said Shaffer.
Fireworks can be sold, purchased, and used from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. until July 4, with the exception of July 4 itself, when sales and use can go until midnight.
City ordinance does not allow bottle rockets or sky lanterns to be used within city limits. Shaffer recommends attending a public, professional fireworks show.
