New Garden To Bloom In Downtown Cape Girardeau

Gold shovels broke at the new Melvin Gately Vision 2000 Garden in downtown Cape Girardeau on St. Patrick’s Day.

The garden was previously at Cape Girardeau City Hall and will be relocated next to the Red House Interpretive Center. The new location allows for more visibility downtown.

Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation director Julia Thompson says the new garden will bring more attention to the downtown area and to the city’s history. Thompson hopes the garden will be the site for many activities that showcase Cape Girardeau’s history.

"The new location for the Melvin Gately Vision 2000 Garden is going to receive a lot more visibility. It helps celebrate a portion of the city’s history where they were really working to plan the future and have some exciting activities and events that would document the progression of the city,” Thompson said..

The project will cost about $10,000. Personalized bricks are being sold in order to raise funds for the garden.

For more information on how to purchase a personalized brick, contact the City Park and Recreation Department at (573) 339-6340.
