Broadway’s 400 Block On Its Way To National Register

The south side of Broadway Street’s 400 block in Cape Girardeau is on its way towards inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation approved the block on Friday.

The south side of the 400 block includes businesses like The Corner Grocery Store and Philanthropy.

Dr. Steven Hoffman teaches Historic Preservation at Southeast Missouri State University. He said this listing increases the boundaries of a previously listed area.

“The 500 block is already listed on the National Register so we’re increasing the boundaries to include the 400 block in part to help facilitate the rehabilitation of that building that Philanthropy occupies,” Hoffman said.

Listing on the National Register allows property owners to take advantage of historic tax credits for rehabilitation. Hoffman added that it also has a socio-cultural benefits.

“One of the things that it says about a community is that we have this heritage that we are proud of and that we are willing to proclaim and say these buildings are important and we need to preserve them. It provides an outside stamp of approval,” Hoffman said.

The final step is to be approved by the National Park Service.
