City Prepares For Old CVB Building Demolition

The City of Cape Girardeau will begin demolition of the old Convention and Visitors Bureau building in the early summer.

Midwest Environmental Services completed asbestos removal last week.

City manager Scott Meyer says the city can now contract out the remainder of the demolition.

“It’s a separate contract and so we’ll be letting a contract and then once that contractor can get his bonds and then come in, so it will be this summer and hopefully in the early part of this summer so that we can have the parking available,” Meyer said.

Meyers says the land will be converted into a parking lot.

“The land that’s then available, then really we begin to ask the question and what’s the highest and best use of that land as well, so we’re turning it parking for now,” Meyers said. “But in the future there could be another use there may be another use that could happen for that property.”

The demolition is being paid for by funds generated by casino revenue.
