Southeast Athletics

Southeast Missouri has been selected to win the 2020 Ohio Valley Conference softball title as voted on by the league's head softball coaches and sports information directors.

SEMO earned 16 first-place votes and a total 236 points. Jacksonville State, which picked up six first-place votes, is second with 221 points, while Eastern Kentucky earned the two remaining first-place nods and 195 points.

The Redhawks earned a share of their sixth regular-season title in program history after going 46-18 overall and 17-5 in the OVC. SEMO claimed the top spot in the OVC Championship and went on to win its fifth tourney title and first in 20 years. Mark Redburn, who was named the 2019 OVC Coach of the Year, is entering his sixth season at the helm.

He will have a pair of  All-Conference selections back this season in senior outfielder Rachel Anderson and senior infielder Ashley Ellis. Ellis, who was a First-Team All-OVC selection, recorded a .330 batting average with 62 hits and a team high 17 home runs.

Meanwhile, Anderson was named the 2019 OVC Player of the Year after leading the league in batting average (.454), slugging percentage (.842), hits (83) and triples (10). She was recently ranked 54th among Softball America's Top 100 players for the upcoming 2020 season. The Edwardsville, Illinois, native is the only Ohio Valley Conference player on the nation's elite list.

SEMO opens its 2020 season at the Troy University Tournament in Troy, Alabama this weekend, and will play its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 29.
