Two-Minute Drill: Redhawks Soccer to Honor Meg Herndon in ‘Green Up’ Game

Tragedy struck the SEMO Soccer program in 2012 when senior defender Meg Herndon was involved in a fatal truck-scooter accident. Herndon was was hospitalized for 11 days before passing away on Sept. 20, 2012.

This evening, on Meg’s seven year angel anniversary, the Redhawk program will honor Herndon with its annual “Green Up” game at 6:30 p.m. at Houck Stadium.

The Redhawks will wear special green and blue uniforms, which are the official colors of Donate Life America.

The game, as well as the events surrounding the match, will not only honor Herndon’s memory but also raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation.

While she was in the hospital, Meg’s family decided to allow their daughter’s organs to be harvested for those in need. In all, Meg helped 17 people through organ and tissue donation.

To this day, Megs legacy continues to live on in the Redhawk soccer program. Her number 2 has been retired, and her family makes contributions every year to the Meg Herndon Endowed Scholarship - awarded to a soccer student-athlete each school who embodies Megs mantra, “Impossible is Nothing.”

Nearly 114,000 people are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplants nationwide - that’s enough people to fill Busch Stadium almost three times! On average, 22 people die each day while waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant.

Join the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in providing hope to those waiting and register your decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor at RegisterMe.org.
