Two-Minute Drill: Romana Tarajova Named OVC Freshman of the Year

Southeast Athletics

Romana Tarajova was named the Ohio Valley Conference women's tennis Freshman of the Year and earned First-Team All-OVC honors. Tarajova is the third SEMO women's tennis player to win OVC Freshman of the Year and second in three years as Oleksandra Doroshenko garnered the award in 2017.

Head coach Mary Beth Gunn said Romana played fantastic this season in the one position as a freshmen, and she handled this challenge with class and was competitive with everyone who she played against, including some strong seniors in the conference.

Tarajova, who hails from Slovakia, notched a 12-5 record at the top singles position in 2019 with a 5-3 mark in conference matches.

In doubles, Tarajova fashioned a 9-4 dual record with Manuela Barriga at the third slot.

Tarajova and the Redhawks defeated No. 4 seeded Belmont last weekend to advance to the Semifinals of the 2019 OVC Women's Tennis Championship, which marks the first time SEMO advanced to the OVC semifinals in 16 years.

The Redhawks season ultimately came to a close the next day at the hands of eventual champion Austin Peay, which is undefeated this season. SEMO finished the season 12-10, their second 12+ win season in the last three years, and will return all but one athlete who scored victories against conference opponents to the squad next season.
