Two-Minute Drill: Denzel Mahoney Named "Freshman of the Week"

Southeast Missouri State University
Denzel Mahoney

Southeast Missouri guard Denzel Mahoney was named adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week Monday for his performance last week.

Mahoney averaged 16.5 points, four rebounds and two assists in two games last week. He shot 50 percent from the field, 62.5 percent from 3-point range and was a perfect 14-of-14 at the free throw line. Mahoney opened the week with 10 points, two rebounds and an assist in a home victory over Tennessee Tech. Two days later, he scored a season-high 23 points, made three 3-pointers and buried 12-of-12 free throws at UT Martin. Only 10 players nationally have made more free throws without a miss in a game this season.

A native of Oviedo, Florida, Mahoney was a key piece of head coach Rick Ray’s first full recruiting class. As a junior in high school, he was named the Florida State Player of the Year at the 8A level – the highest level of prep sports in the state. This season, he has started every game for the Redhawks, averaging 12.2 point per game, second most on the team. Mahoney currently ranks seventh in the OVC in free throw percentage at 81.3 percent, and in conference play he has only missed one free throw.

The Redhawks return to the Show Me Center tomorrow, Saturday, January 21 to host Eastern Illinois. The women tip-off at 2 p.m., followed by the men at 4:15 p.m. Coming into the week, the SEMO men were 6-2 in home games, including 2-0 in conference games at home.
