All About Cape: 2019 Homecoming at SEMO

Visit Cape

It’s homecoming time at Southeast Missouri State University, which means there’s a lot going on around town, from the annual parade to tailgating to the RedHawks versus UT Martin football game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 26 in Houck Stadium.

Homecoming has been a staple at Southeast since the 1920s, and the tradition is said to have originated in Missouri. The story goes that in 1911, Mizzou invited their alumni to attend a football game against the University of Kansas, accompanied by a pep rally and parade.  Other schools followed Mizzou’s lead and more than 100 years later, homecoming is still one of the biggest celebrations in town.  Even if you’re not a Southeast alum or student, everyone in town is a Redhawk this week.

Also happening this weekend: a canoe trip across Lake Girardeau.  One of the loveliest places in the area, Lake Girardeau bursts into color this time of year, with gold, orange and scarlet leaves reflecting across the ripples.  The adventure takes place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 26.  Meet other canoers at the Conservation Nature Center to start an unforgettable trip into the wilderness.  If you don’t have a canoe, the Nature Center will loan you one.

I would be remiss not to tell you about the biggest Halloween party in town specially created for kids ages 12 and under.  The Halloween Hoopla takes place on Friday, October 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shawnee Park Center.  Get a little messy with pumpkin bowling and pumpkin decorating.  Plus, show off your Halloween outfit at the costume contest.
