Recycling Services In Scott City To Be Discontinued In June

Lindsey Grojean/KRCU

Scott City residents will no longer be able to recycle materials, come June. Inter-rail Systems, an environmental engineer company, has been operating out of Scott City for several years, and will no longer be able to take recycled items.

City administrator Doug Richards says this is due to a lack in demand for recycled products after they are collected, resulting in the disappearance of the market in the area.

“The prices have declined so much that the people who take the recycling, and a lot of companies who do recycling, have now found themselves in a position where it doesn't make them any money,” says Richards. “And it is simply losing money.”

Richards says after checking with many other area companies, none are able to take the city’s recyclables. And, many companies who do take them are turning it into trash. Cape Girardeau has a transfer station on Southern Expressway, but requires a fee.

Starting June 11, Scott City residents must place recyclables in their weekly trash pick-up.
