Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson joined aspiring young gymnasts yesterday at Southeast’s Parker Hall for a gymnastics clinic. Local mom, Jessica Stephens said her daughter Allie couldn’t stop talking about Johnson on the car ride there.
“I’m so glad we were able to get her in, and glad that she was in Cape," Stephens said. "It’s just really a good experience.”
And her daughter Allie said, she enjoyed working with an Olympian.
"I worked on some skills in every event, and it was pretty cool,” Allie said.
Brittney Emmons, an assistant gym coach at Southeast, said it’s great they could get someone of Johnson’s success to come in and work with kids aspiring to be like her one day.
“They have a goal to look forward to," Emmons said. "They know who she is, and they know what she’s been able to do and accomplish. Hopefully that helps motivate these girls and keep the interest within the sport.”
Johnson spoke at the Show-Me-Center Monday night for the University’s Speaker Series.
