Traffic Signal Going In At Broadway And Henderson Streets

A new traffic signal is being installed at the intersection of Broadway and Henderson Street in Cape Girardeau. The signal is a cost sharing project between the city and Southeast Missouri State University, and will include push buttons to help pedestrians cross the street.

City engineer Casey Brunke said there is a lot of traffic at the intersection because it is the main entrance to the university.

“There is a lot of congestion there at the intersection,” Brunke said. “If you try to make a left hand turn coming out of there at certain times of day, it’s very difficult and you’re going across two lanes of traffic. We just thought it was safer to have a traffic signal in that location.”

Brunke added that it is far enough away from the West End Boulevard-Broadway Street intersection to not cause any problems.

“It’s far enough away if you do the traffic studies and what not,” Brunke said. “It is far enough away from the intersection and you can coordinate those signals as well, so there shouldn’t be any issues with backups into either intersection.”

Brunke said the intersection will not be closed during construction.

Construction should be done by the first week in September barring any problems with weather or delays in getting materials.
