All About Cape: Family Weekend at Southeast

Visit Cape

Fall’s a busy time, and things are starting to really ramp up this week.  Family Weekend at Southeast from Friday, September 20 to Sunday, September 22 means a lot of new faces in town.

If you are here visiting a student, I invite you to go beyond campus borders and soak in the local vibe.  The Mississippi River is a great place to start.  It is a beautiful and serene place that has a special charm about it as you gaze at the fall foliage on the other side.  One of the prettiest views is at the old Bridge Overlook on Morgan Oak Street in Cape’s historic area.

While you’re downtown admiring the river, take a few moments to stroll the streets and stop in at a few shops.  Whether your taste is vintage or modern, there’s a range of places offering unique items you will love, not to mention restaurants with cuisine from all over the world.

Immerse yourself in the local culture at the Cape Riverfront Market and Tunes at Twilight.  The Riverfront Market meets downtown on Spanish Street every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon May through October.  You will find traditional farmers market fruits and veggies but, also painters, handmade jewelry, live music, freshly baked desserts and so much more.  Nearly everyone in town stops by, so it’s a great place to become familiar with Cape.

Another beloved Cape community gathering is Tunes at Twilight.  Friday, September 20 is the last concert of 2019, and it features eclectic vocalist, guitarist and percussionist Jaime Marvin.  Everyone gathers at the gazebo in Ivers Square with lawn chairs or blankets to mingle and enjoy a peaceful evening of music starting at 6:30 p.m.
