Exposition: Kantorei Choir From Jackson Selected To Perform The Music Of Will Todd At Lincoln Center

St. Paul Lutheran Church - Jackson
'Kantorei' performs at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson.

Kantorei, a 37-member choir from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, is composed of singers from eighth grade through well-seasoned members in their 80s. They were recently selected to perform at Lincoln Center in New York City this spring, and will be performing the fresh, jazz-like choral music of Will Todd.

According to St Paul's music director, Matt Palisch, at first listen, Todd is not the composer you would assume to write choral music, especially of such high quality. He's written operas, chamber music, instrumental pieces, and of course has created an extensive repetoire of choral works.

"His music is very fresh. He knows harmony from the jazz perspective so well," says Palisch. "It's very different, but very easy on the ears."

Two choirs will be assembling for the event. The other choir will perform Todd's Mass in Blue - a jazz spin on the traditional Latin mass. Kantorei will be performing his Songs of Peace, a 6-movement requiem of sorts, and a standalone anthem called No More Sorrow, based on text from Revelations 21.
