Don't Miss the Spring Percussion Ensemble and "Punk Rock" at the River Campus

Southeast Missouri State University

This week brings us shows at the River Campus that bring new meaning to the phrase "hard hitting."

Spring must mean it’s time for the Spring Percussion Ensemble and Steel Drum Band concert. If you’ve never been to a percussion concert, it’s difficult to imagine drums making complete music, but that’s just what happens when these students take the stage.  On March 8, you can hear the Ensemble’s rendition of favorites like “La Bamba,” “I Can See Clearly Now,” and “Jump in the Line (Shake Serona).”

We know once you experience it, you’ll be hooked. So, return on March 25 for Southeast Percussion Day where area high schools are invited for classes throughout the day, culminating in a concert that evening featuring professional guest percussionists from across the country.

Switching to another kind of hard hitting--The Conservatory of Theatre and Dance students bring a stark offering in their second stage production of Punk Rock. Showcasing the suffering that comes with adolescence, the play occurs during the weeks leading to mock exams that will determine where the students go to college--when tensions are guaranteed to run high..

Punk Rock was nominated in 2010 for the UK Theatre Awards Best New Play Award. You can take in this thought-provoking work in the Rust Theatre March 8 – 10. The show does include adult language and content.

Lastly, from the world of art, the 40th annual high school exhibition is at the Crisp Museum through March 18. And, at the River Campus Art Gallery, Bryan Franklin is showing his digital and mixed media art in Dark Web.
