In lieu of Sunday’s 9/11 memorials, the Cape Girardeau Heritage Museum unveiled a sculpture honoring the Cape Girardeau Fire and Police Departments.

Made of stainless steel, Espirit de Corps is shaped like a flame. The sculpture, which took nearly three years to complete, was unveiled Sunday at the Cape Girardeau Heritage Museum on the 15th anniversary of Sept. 11. Sculptor Chris Wubbena put his inventive mind and hands to work for the Heritage Museum in honor of Cape Girardeau’s law enforcement.

“Really, this is about the triumph, the spirit of the group, and what we can do when we work together, and what really community is,” Wubbena said. “And I do think that firefighters and police officers they are the bedrock of community.”

Espirit de Corps can be seen alongside Independence Street.Currently, the Museum has plans to surround the edifice with a brick area and benches for visitors to enjoy.
