Musical "Legally Blonde" Comes to River Campus

Knowing who you are and showing what you are -- that's the message in the musical "Legally Blonde." The Tony-Nominated musical opens at the River Campus October 2 and is being presented by the Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University.

Dr. Kenn Stilson is directing the musical and he says the musical is very unique and features a broad range of musical styles, "It's got everything from urban funk, to calypso, to traditional Broadway uptempo and ballads -- to Gilbert and Sullivan." Almost the entire show is underscored with music. Stilson says the musical is packed with music and action throughout.

The musical is based on the 2001 film that starred Reese Witherspoon. In the film, and the musical, Elle Woods is dumped by her boyfriend that she is still in love with, so follows him to Harvard Law School. She makes it into Harvard as well but no one thinks she will succeed because everyone thinks she is just a "pretty face." But as it turns out, she is a really good lawyer.

Coincidentally, Reese Witherspoon will likely be in Cape Girardeau during the run of "Legally Blonde." She is a producer of the movie "Gone Girl" that is being filmed in Cape Girardeau. Stilson said that they have invited Witherspoon and everyone involved with the film to attend either a dress rehearsal or a regular production of "Legally Blonde."

“Legally Blonde” will be presented by the Department of Theatre and Dance in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus October 2-5 at 7:30 p.m. and at 2:00 p.m. on October 6. Tickets can be purchased at the River Campus Box Office  by calling (573) 651-2265  and at RiverCampusEvent.com.
