So Sweet: Twinkies Return To Southeast Missouri Shelves

Twinkies returned to shelves on Monday after a long absence. They have been unavailable since last year, when Hostess went bankrupt. Hostess is now owned by two separate companies. Apollo Global Management now owns the part of Hostess that manufactures Twinkies.

David Adams, a Twinkie lover from Charleston, was heartbroken when he learned there would be no more Twinkies.

“I was very sad,” Adams said. “Me and a couple buddies of mine actually went out and bought quite a few boxes and had a going away Twinkie party.”

Adams said that he didn’t hoard Twinkies during their gap in production- he couldn’t resist eating the ones he had. He hasn’t had one of the new Twinkies yet, but he plans to buy a box or two this week. In this case, absence makes the heart grow fonder. Adams says the lack of Twinkies made him realize how much he liked them.

Shawn Wasson, pastor of Cape Girardeau’s Bethany Baptist Church, has loved Twinkies since he was a child.

“One of my childhood memories was I grew up in St. Louis and we got to take a tour of a Hostess factory and see different things, and they gave us little Twinkie the Kid rings and I just always liked that little cowboy Twinkie the Kid theme,” Wasson said.

Wasson bought a box on Monday when they came back on store shelves and will probably buy another box before the end of the week.

Wasson said he didn’t collect Twinkies during the time that they were gone. He believes Twinkies are for eating, not for collecting dust.
