Student-Led Newspaper Southeast Arrow Nominated For Third National Award

Lindsey Grojean/KRCU

The Southeast Arrow is in the running as a finalist for what would be their third Pinnacle Award from the College Media Association.

The award would be in recognition of their work during the 2018-2019 academic year, so current chief editor Zach Tate doesn’t take too much credit for it, other than through his prior role as sports editor.

“It’s not really reflecting my time as editor-in-chief,” he said, describing their success as a culmination of improvement for the Arrow.

He says he thinks to incoming reporters, being a part of an award-winning newspaper will open great opportunities.

“We’re setting a standard of excellence and maintaining it,” said Tate. “And it’s kind of like this is something they can strive to and be a part of so that they’re able to help contribute and improve themselves.”

Tate says as the current editor, he takes pride in the already award-winning publication, and hopefully maintaining that standard for the years ahead.

“It makes me proud to know that the hard work and countless hours I put into my section last year, and other people put into their section in years past--it’s showing for something,” he says. “That’s how anybody who’s contributed to the Arrow over the last four years feels about it as well.”

A conference will be held in Washington D.C. from Oct. 31 through Nov. 2, where contest winners will be announced and Arrow faculty advisor, Dr. Tamara Zellars Buck will also be inducted as an officer in the College Media Association.
