While calls for Michigan to re-open the state’s economy continue to grow, Governor Gretchen Whitmer remains unwavering in her emergency “stay-at-home” declaration. On Wednesday, she said the order will likely be extended for the “near future.

State Republicans and conservative protestors have called the restrictions unnecessary and an infringement on their rights. Demonstrators against the stay-at-home order blocked traffic in Lansing, the state’s capital, last week.

President Trump has consistently ridiculed the governor on television and on Twitter, calling her “that woman” and “failing.” He tweeted “Liberate Michigan,” in support of the protests against her order.

Governor Whitmer is a rising star within the Democratic party and this attention has only raised her profile. Presidential candidate Joe Biden has listed her among his potential picks for a running mate.
