"Great Rivers Symphonies" to Wrap Up Southeast Symphony Season

The fourth collaboration between the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra and the Southern Illinois Symphony takes the stage at the Bedell Performance Hall on Monday, April 24.

"Great Rivers Symphonies" wraps up the Southeast Symphony’s season with a concert not to be missed. Artistic director Sara Edgerton says combining symphonies allows more players, meaning the ability to program special works … but that’s not the only benefit of the collaboration.

"Since we perform the program twice: here and at SIU-Carbondale, we have the opportunity to perform in several concert halls and multiple times. And from an educational standpoint, it is very valuable, since the students from the two universities sit side-by-side in the orchestra: they can learn a lot from each other."

Edgerton says in honor of the River Campus’ tenth season, they wanted to pay homage to the river as their muse.

"There will be three main pieces on the program: Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony, which is a beautiful work written in honor of the Rhine River in Germany; Bedrich Smetana’s the Moldau, in honor of the Moldau River in Czechoslovakia, and Ferdinand Grofe’s Mississippi Suite, a jazzy suite that celebrates the Mississippi."

Also … art lovers should head to the River Campus now for the Annual Juried Student Exhibition at the Crisp Museum … and while you’re there … get tickets for the final performance this season of the university and chamber choirs on April 18.

For full details … show times … tickets and more head to rivercampus.org … and I hope to see you soon at the box office.
