The Cape Girardeau Historic Preservation Commission has released its Endangered Buildings list for 2017. The list is compiled of public-nominated and commission-approved structures believed to have historical value, and may be at risk of vacancy, deterioration, or emminent demolition.

Chairwoman for the commission, Alyssa Phares, says while they are not tasked with saving these buildings, their goal is to create a public awareness campaign for historical preservation.

“It’s a time to bring attention to structures that are architecturally significant, historically significant, [and] culturally significant here in Cape Girardeau,” says Phares. “You know, buildings cannot speak for themselves; we have to talk for them.”

Six structures have been added to the list, and some have been removed due to demolition or revival.
