This week on KRCU’s Going Public, the Cape Girardeau City Council recently voted to rename the historic Common Pleas Courthouse Park after a former slave who enlisted as a Union Army soldier during the Civil War. Dr. Steven Hoffman, professor of history and coordinator of the historic preservation program at Southeast Missouri State University joins us to talk about the life of James Ivers, the significance of renaming the courthouse park, Cape Girardeau’s role during the civil war and the nationwide trend of removing confederate monuments.
