This week’s episode of KRCU’s Going Public we’re talking about the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s recent decision to remove 185 families from two public housing complexes in Cairo, Illinois with Molly Parker, an investigative reporter at the Southern Illinoisan newspaper in Carbondale. We’ll talk about the conditions of the complexes that have been described as third world, the allegations made against the Alexander County Housing Authority for alleged civil rights violations and mismanagement of federal funds, and why HUD took over for the Alexander County Housing Authority. We’ll also talk about what’s next for these Cairo residents in the future.
