Southeast Missouri’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have officially started practice. Both teams are preparing for their upcoming 2016-17 seasons, which begin with exhibition action in early November.

On the men’s side, Southeast welcomes 11 newcomers, including nine new scholarship players. Seniors Antonius Cleveland, Joel Angus III, Jamaal Calvin and Trey Kellum are the returnees from a year ago. The Redhawks enter their second season under head coach Rick Ray.

Southeast’s women’s team, under the direction of second-year head coach Rekha Patterson, returns starters Bri Mitchell and Adrianna Murphy. Mitchell was a Second-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference pick for the Redhawks who went 15-15 overall and made the league’s postseason tournament last season. Olivia Hackmann is also back after missing all but nine games with an injury a year ago.

Fans can get their first look at the 2016-17 Southeast men’s and women’s basketball teams during a special Redhawks Madness event on Tuesday, October 18. Doors open at the Show Me Center at 6:30 p.m. This year’s event features intrasquad scrimmages by both teams, prize giveaways and a live DJ. Admission is free for all fans.

In addition, two lucky Southeast students in attendance will have the opportunity to participate in a shooting challenge for a chance to win $10,000.
