Cape Girardeau Officials Considering Downtown Trolley

Cape Girardeau officials are considering adding a trolley to the downtown area.

Cape Girardeau City Manager Scott Meyer says the idea is still in its infancy. He says a trolley would help get people to and from the casino and other downtown destinations.

“And really there’s quite a bit of parking downtown. The question is proximity. A trolley helps solve that problem by allowing people to park maybe away from where they want to go, ride the trolley to where they want to go, maybe go to two or three places,” Meyer said. “Maybe they spend the day, go by the casino, and all of those things can be solved with the trolley and leave the car in one place.”

Meyer says he does not anticipate the city will operate the trolley.

“We would have to talk to different partners. There’s Cape County Transit, there’s the casino. Both of them operate these type of things. I don’t think we’re looking to operate something, so we would look at how do we come to an agreement to have one of those operations, or maybe another operator, operate something like that,” Meyer said.

He hopes the city will be able to partner with the Isle of Capri casino, the Cape County Transit Authority, or another operator.

Meyer says it will not be a rail trolley, and it is too early to project costs or a timeline.
