Cape Chamber

Do you know the most frequent concern expressed by our existing employers about job applicants?

At the top of the list is the lack of essential skills. Employers, schools, churches, civic organizations, charities, and even parents are talking about the decline in essential skills, or soft skills, in the world today. The Chamber’s response was the creation of the effort called Capable.

Capable brings individuals together to create a common language and better connect our community with key resources. An enhanced focus on these essential skills will help individuals in Cape Girardeau County be more prepared for life and work.

Capable is one of the most comprehensive, community-wide essential skills campaigns in the nation. Partner organizations with the Chamber include: the University, Cape and Jackson public schools, the Career and Technology Center, ABCToday, and more. Essential skills to be highlighted are from the 4 C’s: communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Each month, partners and local businesses focus on one of these areas.

The Goals of Capable are to define and create common language around essential skills throughout our region, improve the state of essential skills in the community, and improve our regional workforce

Capable began in August 2018, and is now entering year two, in conjunction with the school year. We provide a theme for each month, with a number of resources to help partners focus on essential skills.
