Two-Minute Drill: SEMO Women’s Basketball Wins OVC Tournament

Southeast Athletics

The Redhawk women’s basketball team is Ohio Valley Conference Champions!

SEMO won the OVC Tournament Championship in Evansville two weeks ago. The #3-seeded Redhawks won three games in three days to claim the title, including wins over the defending dour-time league champion Belmont, and top-seeded UT Martin.

In the first round, the Redhawks needed overtime to beat #6 Tennessee Tech, and they did so in dramatic fashion – a three-point shot at the buzzer by sophomore Taelour Pruitt secured the victory for the Redhawks and earned SEMO the number one spot on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays.

The Redhawks followed the dramatic victory with a record-setting win over #2 seed Belmont, as they scored a program and tournament record 114 points. In the championship game, the Redhawks played stifling defense against #1 seed UT Martin in a 67-47 win.

Junior Tesia Thompson was named OVC Tournament Most Valuable Player. Over the three games, she averaged 31 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

However, the Redhawks won’t get the chance to participate in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA announced last week that all remaining winter and spring championships are cancelled. The Redhawks would have played their first-round game either today or tomorrow.

SEMO finishes the season with a 25-7 record, the most wins in the program’s Division I history, and head coach Rekha Patterson was named OVC Coach of the Year.
