Two-Minute Drill: SEMO Football Makes History, Wins FCS Playoff Game

Southeast Athletics

The SEMO Football team made history last Saturday, November 24, 2018. Hosting the first-ever FCS Playoff game at Houck Field, the Redhawks erased a 14-point halftime deficit en route to a 28-14 victory over #15 Stony Brook. The win was the first FCS playoff win in school history, and it happened in front of an energetic Redhawk crowd.

Trailing 14-0 at halftime, SEMO come out and scored 28 points all in the third quarter to pull ahead. Three of the four touchdowns came after Stony Brook turnovers. The Redhawks currently boast a +27 turnover margin – which is the best in all of college football at any level, and currently tied for the fifth best all-time in FCS Football history.

The playoff game was streamed to a worldwide audience on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app, and the broadcasters had high praise for the SEMO Football team and the game day atmosphere in and around Houck Field. At one point, one broadcaster even called Touchdown Plaza – the parking and tailgate area inside the gates immediately beyond the east end zone – his “favorite tailgate area in the country.”

The Redhawks will continue their season on Saturday, December 1, in the second round of the FCS Playoffs. SEMO travels to Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, located just 38 miles north of Salt Lake City. Weber State is the number two seed in the playoffs.

Kickoff from Ogden tomorrow will be 3 p.m. central time. The game will again be streamed online, for free, on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app. Wings Etc. in Cape Girardeau and Jackson is hosting official watch parties for local fans. In the St. Louis area, Helen Fitzgerald’s in Kirkwood is hosting a watch party for SEMO alumni.

In other action on campus this weekend, the SEMO men’s basketball team hosts Western Illinois at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, at the Show Me Center. Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal to throw onto the court during halftime, which will be collected and donated to Toys for Tots.
