The Redhawks Softball team is off to a blazing start this season, and last weekend celebrated a historic win.
Last Friday at the Razorback Invitiational, the Redhawks defeated the host Arkansas Razorbacks, who were ranked #12 in the nation. SEMO claimed a 2-1 lead on a Sarah Messex solo home run in the top of the fifth inning and never looked back, going on to score four more runs in the seventh en route to a 6-1 victory.
The win was head coach Mark Redburn’s first over a ranked opponent, and another victory over IUPUI the following day gave Redburn his 100th win at the helm of the SEMO Softball program. The Redhawks improved to 9-6 on the season – their second best record through 15 games in the last 10 seasons.
The Redhawks are leading the OVC in batting average and runs scored, and ranked tied for second in the league in home runs.
Meanwhile on the tennis court, Romana Tarajova was named the Ohio Valley Conference Female Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Tarajova posted a perfect 4-0 record in singles and doubles this past weekend as Southeast Missouri women's tennis placed third at Illinois State's Redbird Invitational. Tarajova is performing in the number one singles position as a freshman and currently hold a three-match winning streak, which she’ll look to extend this weekend as the Redhawks compete against Bradley University.
