Two-Minute Drill: Redhawks Gymnastics Ranks 13th in the Nation for GPA

Southeast Athletics

Southeast Missouri women's gymnastics ranked 13th overall for team grade-point averages (GPAs) for the 2018-19 academic year based on data released by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA).

Southeast registered a 3.67 GPA during the spring and had a cumulative GPA of 3.65 for the 2018-19 academic year. The Redhawks ranking improved to 22 spots from the year before.

Head coach Ashley Lawson is extremely thrilled with this year's GPA. Coach Lawson is proud of the team’s resilience and how they persevered through much adversity in the gym and in the classroom. And she said what makes the jump in the rankings 22 spots even more impressive is the student-athletes’ majors and course loads. The gymnastics team includes a number of students majoring programs like Biochemistry, Nursing, Finance, Medical Lab Sciences, and Biomedical Sciences.

The Redhawk gymnasts have displayed a tremendous ability to balance everything that goes into being a student-athlete.

Eleven members of the 2019 Redhawks team earned WCGA Scholastic All-America Awards. Lindsey Bates, Allyson Bell, Kendra Benak, Megan Dennis, Alana Fischer, Samantha Gallet, Anna Kaziska, Makenzie Marciniak, Michael Sanders, Kenna Skepnek and Mackenzie Slee each posted GPAs of 3.5 or higher during 2018-19 to garner the award.

WCGA president Kerrie Turner commented that the strong academic results across the country were an indication that women’s gymnastics student-athletes are as talented academically as they are athletically.
The WCGA is the advocate for women's collegiate gymnastics.
