Two-Minute Drill: Redhawks End Historic Season with Loss to #2 Weber State

Southeast Athletics

The Redhawks Football team’s historic season came to an end last weekend in the second round of the FCS Playoffs. The SEMO Football team scored first and put up 23 points, but ultimately lost the number-two seed in the country, Weber State.

Hundreds of SEMO alumni and fans packed sports bars throughout the Cape Girardeau area and even in St. Louis, gathering together to cheer on the Redhawks as they extended their season following the first FCS Playoff win in school history the week before.

Although the book has closed on the 2018 season, Weber State’s head coach Jay Hill even said after the game that the Redhawks could certainly find themselves in Weber State’s position before too long, remarking the SEMO program resembles where Weber State was last year.

The Redhawks will return 16 starters next year, including six All-OVC selections. One of the key players returning is linebacker Zach Hall, who earned the OVC Defensive Player of the Year award. And just earlier this week, it was announced that Hall was among the top three finalists for the Buck Buchanan Award, presented to the national defensive player of the year in all of FCS Football.

The winner of the Buck Buchanan Award will be announced at the STATS FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation on January 4 in Frisco Texas. Hall is the first student-athlete from SEMO ever to be invited to the ceremony.

In action back on campus this week, the Redhawks Track & Field team competes in its first indoor meet of the season today at the Student Recreation Center, hosting OVC foe SIU Edwardsville. Field events begin at 3 p.m., followed by running events at 6 p.m.

And tomorrow, the SEMO men’s basketball team will host the regional rival SIU Salukis. Tip-off at the Show Me Center is set for 6:30 p.m. Kids age 14 & under receive free admission, and first 1,000 fans will receive a Redhawks stocking cap, courtesy of Wood & Huston Bank.
