The Scottrade Center will once again be the site of a slice of March Madness action in 2014. It will mark the second time in a dozen years that St. Louis will host second and third-round games.  All told, March Madness has come to St. Louis 20 times in its history.

Despite that frequency, St. Louis Sports Commission chairman Frank Viverito says making an announcement like this never gets old.

“It’s wonderful that St. Louis will be welcoming eight teams and their fans to St. Louis for six games just 16 months from now,” Viverito said.

Also on Monday, the Missouri Valley Conference announced that its men’s tournament will remain at Scottrade until 2015, and its women’s contest in St. Charles until 2014.

Jack Watkins is the conference’s associate commissioner.

“And quite honestly, this is a clear illustration of the Missouri Valley Conference commitment to the greater metropolitan St. Louis community,” Watkins said.

The St. Louis Convention and Visitor’s Commission says opening rounds of the NCAA tournament generated almost $5 million in direct spending in 2002. Numbers were not available for the impact of the Missouri Valley tournaments.
