Southeast Alumni Bring Multicultural Fitness Bootcamp To Cape Girardeau

Looking to bring a new style of fitness to Cape Girardeau, former Semo Athletes are using a mix of African culture and modern music to diversify, motivate, and encourage healthy lifestyles through a multicultural bootcamp.

Just last year, co-founders Contrall Andrews and Kweku Arkoful created the bootcamp to bring African culture to Cape Girardeau. Welcoming individuals of all cultural backgrounds, their main goal is to have a common ground where people can experience culture without any type of discrimination.

“There’s not a lot of culture here in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and if there is a culture, it’s kind of segregated a little bit,” says Arkoful. “So, how can we bring everybody together?”

The event is filled with family and friends who also have their own personal goals. One member, D’erika Rucker, shared a few reasons why she enjoys the bootcamp.

“Just personal goals, trying to get my body right, trying to get my mental health right, and then for the personal connections I get from the people here,” says Rucker.

Aug. 24 was the third installment of a 8-session series. Arkoful says he hopes to involve more Southeast students in the future, as well as incorporate some international elements.
